So there’s been good news and bad news from launching proxyheap. (Btw, you can check it your proxy is working here.)

The good news? We have lots of support! The bad news? There’s a HUGE chunk of proxies misconfigured… rendering them useless। There’s also a bunch of proxies on un-reliable connections — we pass these out to people in Iran and when they’re down, it just makes things harder.

Why I Proxy Iran

As you know the iranian government is trying to shut down sites like twitter and facebook which form the main lines of communication for the protestors in iran. These sites have proved to be vital and are now increasingly unaccesable. Furthermore, by virtue of the connecitons not being anonymous, the users face persecution and truly have something to fear.

However, there is a possibility of setting up so -called proxy's which enable the iranians to use foreign connections (useless for gathering information by ahmadinejad's men) thus enabling them to circumvent the clampdown by the regime.

I hope you understand how vital this is in keeping the lines of communication open. please forward this to you university, or it-staff or people you know with server access.

پراکسی سرور مکزیک:
این روش برای فیس بوک، بی بی سی (حتی تماشای آنلاین تلویزیون) و سی ان ان جواب میده
و دیگر نیازی
به بازکردن سایتهای فیلترشکن یا استفاده از برنامه های پراکسی مثل Freegate و Ultrasurf نداره:

برای Internet Explorer:
در اینترنت اکسپلورر کلیدهای alt+t را گرفته و از منوی tools باز شده، گزینه آخر یعنی internet options را انتخاب کنید. سپس به تب Connections بروید. در صورتی که از اینترنت dial-up استفاده می کنید و یا با یک connection به اینترنت متصل می شوید، روی نام connection خود کلیک کرده و دکمه settings را بزنید. در صفحه باز شده، گزینه Use a proxy... را انتخاب کرده
و در قسمت آدرس این شماره را کپی کنید: 148.233.239.24 در قسمت port هم بنویسید 80. حالا همه پنجره ها را ok کنید تا بسته شوند.
اینترنت اکسپلورر را ببندبد و باز کنید تا فیلتر شکسته شود. در صورتی که از ADSL به صورت شبکه (بدون کانکشن) استفاده می کنید، این تنظیمات را باید به جای کانکشن در LAN settings انجام دهید که در همان قسمت Connection قرار دارد.

برای Firefox:
برای وارد کردن تنظیمات در منوی Tools، گزینه Options را انتخاب کرده و به قسمت Advanced بروید. سپس در قسمت Network دکمه Settings را کلیک کنید و پس از انتخاب Manual proxy configuration، همان شماره ها را در قسمت HTTP Proxy و Port وارد کنید.

How to setup a proxy for Iran citizens (for Windows!)

If you’re using Windows, it’s pretty straight forward to setup a proxy and help give access to those in Iran who are being censored. If you’re running Redhat/CentOS, please use the linux instructions.

1) Download Squid for Windows
2) Extract that zip archive, and move the “squid” folder to the root of your drive (probably C:\).
3) After moving the squid folder, open “C:\squid\etc\squid.conf” in your favorite text editor (not Word).
4) Configure the DNS name servers on the line that says “dns_nameservers” to point at your ISPs DNS servers.
5) Now the fun part, locking access down the just the Iranian IP blocks.

Inside the text editor search (Control-W) for the line “http_access deny all” and change it to “http_access allow all”. This will make your proxy open and accessible to the world. If you would like to limit your proxy to Iranian IP blocks, you want to change “http_access deny all” to read “http_access allow TRUSTED” add a line (BEFORE the http_access line to setup an access control list [ACL]). This ACL line that defines TRUSTED should read:

6) Setup “visible_hostname” (normally just the public IP address).
7) Turn off logging by adding these two lines:

access_log none cache_store_log none

7) Setup the Squid cache by issuing the following command: “c:\squid\sbin\squid -D –z” (No quotes).
Setup Squid to run as a service by issuing the following command: “c:\squid\sbin\squid –i”

Please don’t run this on a machine that you’re worried about or is used for production sites; and take basic security precautions, ie: moving ftp off the default port, using a firewall package, etc.

How to setup a proxy for Iran citizens (for Mac!)

Mac instructions (UNCONFIRMED)

1) Grab this dmg compile of Squid for OS X, and run the package inside it.

2) Look in your Applications folder for a folder called Squid. Inside THAT folder, there is a folder called etc. Inside the etc folder, there is a file called squid.conf. Open it in your text editor of choice.

3) To restrict access to people with Iranian IP addresses find line 1885 (which is blank), just above # And finally deny all other access to this proxy. Copy/paste this code:

4) Go to the next line, which says http_access deny all and replace it with the following: http_access allow TRUSTED

5) On line 705, change the line # cache_access_log /Applications/Squid/var/logs/access.log to cache_access_log none. This is what makes users ‘anonymous’.

6) Open up your Terminal and type sudo /Applications/Squid/sbin/squid -z. Type in your password and hit return. It should give you some output. As long as it doesn’t say “error”, you are fine. If it gives you a “squid is already running” error, try sudo /Applications/Squid/sbin/squid -k reconfigure instead.

7) Go to whatismyip.com and get your IP Address. Note it down.
